With cost of living pressures escalating, it’s important to uncover which discounts for seniors in NSW your parent can take advantage of. If you’re a senior (aged 60 years and over) living in NSW, there are two types of cards designed to help you save money— based on how little or how much you work. Here’s a quick guide to help you determine which card you’re eligible for. We’ll also share what types of goods and services you can save money on, and how to apply.
Eligibility for each card
Seniors Card
This is for individuals aged 60 or over. They need to be permanent residents of NSW, retired and/or work up to 20 hours per week on average over a 12-month period. Holders of this card can also receive a Gold Opal Card, which offers transport concessions across Australia. For full details on transport offers, check the Seniors Card website for each state you visit.
Senior Savers Card
If you’re over 60 working more than 20 hours per week on average over a 12-month period, you’re eligible for the Senior Savers Card. Please note, this card does not include a Gold Opal Card.
Types of discounts for seniors in NSW
Both the Seniors Card and the Senior Savers Card come with a wide range of benefits to help ease cost of living pressures. These include special discounts and deals for:
- shopping (businesses around the state offer a variety of discounts – sometimes up to 10% or more. Items like clothing, homewares and gadget repairs, and more)
- dining (it’s common to see Seniors Cards discounts of 10% at cafes and restaurants around the state, and even some online meal preparation or delivery services)
- travel (you don’t need to organise an overseas trip to save money with the Seniors Card – although there are discounts on cruises and tours as well as chauffeured services and travel insurance). This is in addition to the travel benefits of the Gold Opal card.
- entertainment (art classes, gym memberships, cheaper cinema or theatre tickets, are just some of the entertainment items with discounts available)
- health services (optical and hearing services, hypnotherapy sessions, Bowen Therapy sessions, massages and many more health services offer discounts for seniors in NSW)
and more!
How to find discounts for seniors in NSW
You can find deals near you using the hard copy print directory or online discount map, and explore all available offers on the statewide cardholder benefits page.
Businesses will often have the “Seniors Card welcome here logo” in the window or at the point of sale, but if they don’t, it doesn’t hurt to ask.
Look for the Seniors card welcome here logo above
Can I use my NSW Seniors Cards in other states or countries?
Each Australian state and territory has its own Seniors Card program. Businesses in other states will generally recognise cards from NSW, however they aren’t obliged to honour the same discounts. It’s best to ask if discounts are available for NSW Seniors Cards holders before you buy.
Check out the websites for each state or territory below in the useful links section for more information.
It’s uncommon for other countries to have similar programs. However New Zealand has the New Zealand Super Gold Card where businesses in New Zealand may offer reciprocal rights.
If you’re from another state, territory or New Zealand, many NSW Seniors Cards busnesses will provide reciprocal deals for you – just ask (nicely).
